I really love how BoJack Horseman has bug characters that actually have bug-like faces! Most cartoons just give anthropomorphized bugs a boring old human face with antenna. Did you have any hand in designing the bug characters?

Yep! I love drawing the bugs, lizards, and weirdo animals best. Here’s my sketch for a fave creepy-crawly, Maggot Gyllenhaal ( I love Maggie Gyllenhaal so I tried to draw her as the prettiest maggot. In the BoJack universe, maggots can be hot).

And here’s her final design, drawn and rigged by character designer Lotan Kritchman

I majored in “art” -  mostly painting, ceramics and photography.

This article gives a good, thorough background on how I got involved with this show!

adaptorman:

designing and dressing Buffalo Bikers for season 2 of Bojack….favourite moments of the last 12 months… credit to the immensely talented http://lisahanawalt.tumblr.com/ for original concept

Adam Parton is the lead character designer on BoJack, so he helps create a lot of the heavy duty characters (Wanda, Charlotte, Hank Hippo…) and has a hand in perfecting all the turnarounds. Plus he improves employee morale with his goofy Australian lingo! hehe sorry Adam.

The details on these guys are so rad -  I made one quick sketch for the first guy, then Adam went nuts fleshing out the rest of these Highway Masticators. We also had a long debate over whether it should be “Bovine Badass” or “Badass Bovine.” Sweatin’ the important details over here!

hello lisa! i'm jasper, and I'm 13, and I'm really into drawing but not that good at it. can you provide me with some tips please? thank you so much!!

Enjoy yourself and keep drawing your favorite things. You’ll get “good” at it later. Just draw lots and lots.

Here’s one of my first comics, I made it when I was 11:

image

“Snazzy and Jazz” - A goofy donkey and a suave horse are roommates. I hid this from everyone because I drew kissing scenes (Jazz went on lots of dates)!

Try to limit tracing, drawing from photos, and fan art - that stuff is just for fun, it isn’t so great for observational skills/creativity. I wonder what I learned by doing this tracing when I was seven yrs old?

“By Lisa Hnawalt” good job idiot

This character I made up (his name was James, Rocking Cat, and Ginger, interchangeably) is still so fun to me, even though my drawings are rough baby scribbles. He’s the one in the orange shirt:

He was loosely based on Weird Al Yankovic, he loved to play guitar, and he was suuuuper romantic.

Side bar: Why were all of my main characters dudes?  Because almost all of the funny/relatable characters in the cartoons and movies I liked were boys. :(

With Maria Blasucci, Sarah Burns and Chris Tallman

Featuring special guest Lisa Hanawalt

The incredibly talented Lisa Hanawalt designs the characters for BoJack Horseman on Netflix. She is also our guest for this episode!

EPISODE TRIVIA

- Lisa’s brother, Alexis Hanawalt, edited my 2010 comedy special, You Should Have Told Me!

- I tell the same story on this podcast as I do on The Indoor KIds podcast.  Though they were recorded months apart, they were released on the same day! EMBARRASSING!

- This episode marks our first “recurring characters!”

- At one point in the story, I attempt an impression I’d never tried before, and the immediate inaccuracy of it paralyzed me with laughter!

- Chris Tallman told me days after we recorded that Lisa was doodling as we all were improvising. I asked if she’d send me what she drew that day. She did (see above), and the accompanying message:

I didn’t capture your likeness very well at all :(  But I made up for it with the seals, I nailed that page!

THE NEXT SPONTANEANATION LIVE HAPPENS AT LARGOSATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 12th, WITH SPECIAL GUESTS KRISTEN SCHAAL AND SUPEREGO! BE THERE!

I did! I love FKA Twigs. :)

I’ll often create details like this in Photoshop:

and then a background designer (in this case, the VERY TALENTED Sarah Harkey) will add them in and flesh out other details/jokes/colors/proper perspective/lighting:

It’s very collaborative and fun and lets us get inside the heads of the characters: what would a cool teenage deer hang up in her bedroom? What would a wealthy older catfish’s dining room look like? etc.
